Seeing that video is so disturbing, and probably the worst content ever on Oppo to have a truck involved in.
I feel so sick, sad, and angry for that poor young man’s senseless death and the grief his family must be going through – and how horrible and unheard they must’ve felt this entire time until this broke the news this week ( given that the murder happened in FEBRUARY ). Nothing like needing clicks and likes to ensure justice.
A s a POC in this country I have always felt uneasy about other peoples’ property and being perceived as I belong – say when going for a walk in my neighborhood I make sure I never, ever cross someone else’s property or appear like I might be snooping.
My (Caucasian) wife has always found this strange and silly – but hopefully this event is an example as to why many POC (I know I’m not alone here) feel this way. Perhaps in my case my paranoia is partially unwarranted – only because of the privileges I have in my life being a clean cut, relatively well spoken brown guy, living in a nice neighborhood, in a relatively forward thinking and accepting part of the country (and yes I’m very well aware of Oregon’s history).
For many people less fortunate, as if life wasn’t fucked up enough already right now, this tragic event is simply a reminder as to how fucked up it has always been, and that there’s absolutely nothing they can do about it.
Question - what was the guy who caught this all on film doing in the first place running his camera just driving down the road? Makes it seem like there’s even more to this story.

Funny how those, at least people I’ve discussed this event with that are pro-cop/pro MAGA, see nothing wrong with what happen. These are the same people who go out of their way to shake every officer’s hand, thanking them for their service.... yet disobey all Covid orders

I’m so sorry you have to live in a country where this sort of shit still happens... My oldest, dearest friend from when I was a kid is black, and I just hope and pray that this hatred might end before he has to explain to his young daughters that this is still the America they live in.
I’m hopeful these two murderers are sent away for a long time, and soon.

My take on the video is that it was probably taken by a friend or neighbor of the other two who was along to accost Arbery, and at some point was shared, and at some point someone with enough of a conscience who w as in possession of it got brave enough to give it to the authorities/media.
Worse, it may have been in the hands of the police this whole time, and it’s just finally been leaked to the press.

anyhoo...theres nothing usefull i can say about racism or gun crime in the us of a that hasnt been said a thousand times before (and its not like we are any less racist over here...just mostly unarmed)
as to the question tho... my bet the person filming knew some shit was about to go down...maybe wasnt expecting murder.. but some shit

I read one article saying the guy filming was also part of this “neighborhood watch” group, which is why he was filming right away. It’s not clear who released the video, but obviously it’s a good thing they did.
It’s shameful that police/DAs accepted this combination of citizen’ s arrest/feared for their lives as an excuse (which I’m sure had nothing to do with one of these men having previous been a police officer and worked for the DA’s office). A citizen’s arrest requires that you actually witnessed or have detailed information about the criminal. It’s not enough to simply believe someone looks like the suspected criminal (and I have my doubts “looked like” in this case was much more than looking like a black man).
Even with it going to a grand jury, I’m still not convinced this will even go to trial, the grand jury just gives the DA a way to deflect blame for not prosecuting. Hopefully I’m wrong.

I guess it depends on who you are and where you live, but in general across the board the African American population is obviously affected by this much worse than others like myself - so certainly don’t mean to suggest it’s just as bad for me . I don’t include innocent hispanic folk in this “lighter shade of brown” category like myself given the environment we’ve been in over the last few years - they have some legitimate concerns of their own.
Having kids makes this stuff much worse, I feel for your friend and his young family too. I can’t imagine what goes through his head when these things happen around us. In a sense I’m thankful to have a daughter - just in general guess women are seen as being less threatening (as sexist that in itself is too). Being black and having a son has got to be one of the toughest parenting experiences in this country, all else equal (which of course it never is). Of course no easier for the women around them either having to constantly worry about the safety of the male friends and family around them.

In regards to who may have taken the video, there was a third person identified as ‘Roddy’ involved in trying to trap the jogger. Just a guess but it could be who was following him while driving and filming .
Also, the video is mentioned in the police report, and police and investigators have had access to it since Feb 23, the date of the shooting.

What’s the over/under on justice actually being applied? Given the location, it is far from certain.
Meanwhile even here in supposedly progressive WA, there are horrific cases, and as usual, no accountability:
Around here we also have LEO leadership (bigmouthed untouchable unfireable sheriff types who will earn a nice salary and retire young with platinum bennies , who tend to be the most dramatic in the LEO world) preaching against lawful COVID-related orders based on politics. Some people only care about laws relating to immigration and abortion (and maybe marriage and broken trickle down theory).

Yeah it’s a weird non-sensical combination of “respect the law/authority!” and “we cannot trust the government!”
I’d take them more seriously if these people took the victims side in situations like these where clearly the aggressors were in the wrong and are getting lenient treatment because of their connections to law enforcement and likely the racial elements at play here.
Just imagine 2 black men jumping in a pick up truck with their guns and hunting down a white guy running because they thought he looked like a robbery suspect . They wouldn’t be in jail, they’d be dead too before the hour was up.

You’re absolutely right. We’ve seen this movie before - close to zero faith on my part that this will go to trial or lead to any convictions. But nevertheless hopefully this helps change minds and perspectives in society about the changes we need to demand from those in charge around us.

Speaking of the PNW, this has been in the local news over the last few months. Involves both the Portland Police and West Linn (which is a suburb just down the street) fabricating a case to arrest an innocent man who worked for one of their friends.

I didn’t grow up in the US and was born in 85 so this name didn’t sound familiar to me. Just reading up on him online, crazy that this was during MY lifetime -
On January 17, 1987, Williams led a “March Against Fear and Intimidation” in Forsyth County, Georgia , which at the time (before becoming a major exurb of northern metro Atlanta ) had no non- white residents. The ninety marchers were assaulted with stones and other objects by several hundred counter-demonstrators led by the Nationalist Movement and Ku Klux Klan .
But then again, I guess we’ll have some young adults 20 years from now not believing that the Charlottesville riots of recent were during their lifetimes. We’ve come so far, yet so little has changed at the same time.

Disgusting, in a just society, all of that would be a career destroyer with financial repercussions to last years. And no matter the result of the “independent” investigation, they will almost certainly all still be able to retire after 20-25 years with huge benefits and a fat pension, too. Sounds like some kind of “socialism”, as the ignorant masses like to cry about.
Also hilarious how the fiscal (and social) conservatives blindly bleat about the evil of unions, yet none will dare touch LEO unions, because there isn’t much that pleases a modern conservative more than licking boots.

Glad the comments haven’t gone to the trolls yet...
One of my kids is African-American, and he is treated differently. There is no denying it. It was actually sometimes worse in Europe and horrible when we lived in the Middle East, but still very apparent in the US. He’s 14 now, and we’ve had to talk about how not to get murdered by the police. I also talk to my white kids about being respectful to officers, but the stakes are higher for my black child. I worry he’ll get shot for reaching for his wallet while black...
This case in Georgia is complex, but I would like to see the DA say “maybe he had just committed a crime, but even a uniformed officer can’t use lethal force in that scenario, so we’re pressing charges”. This would deflate the whole question of whether the young man was “suspicious” or not.

Absolutely - racism exists all over the world, just look at the news pieces about how black people were being treated in CHINA during this current pandemic. It just gets much, much more dangerous here when it’s combined with this country’s civilian gun culture and convenient interpretations of laws in certain areas.
I can’t imagine how difficult it must be to be a parent of a black child - and I certainly didn’t mean any of this to be an “appropriation” of sorts in saying “its equally bad for people like me” - it’s nowhere as bad. The dichotomy between your black son and the others must be a difficult balancing act too. Our daughter (currently 2) is pretty light skinned brown so far - I’ve dealt with this stuff for my entire adult life, but I suspect my wife (Irish American) is going to have a hard time as she grows up seeing the difference between how she is/was treated vs. our daughter. Again, nothing like this story obviously or the risks for your family , crazy orders of magnitude difference but it’ll probably be an awakening for her that I suspect people don’t realize fully until they’re living it.

This story and the video filled me with anger, sadness, and helplessness.
I ain’t white either, but a sians deal with their own niche of racism. What black people have to deal with is absolutely insane.
It looked like straight up murder to me, I hope they face justice but a part of me fears that their penalty, if any, will not be as severe as many hope.

So the new news is that the leaker is a defense attorney who had consulted with these guys, but isn’t representing them. It’s not at all clear that he’s a champion of justice though. Reading between the lines a bit, it seems like he thought the video would be seen as exculpatory, and shut up people who had been agitating over this case creating strife over the shooting. Apparently the thinking was “see, these guys aren’t Klansmen in full dress shooting black people on sight, so it’s fine!”
Assuming that was his intention, h e does seem astute enough to not quite say that directly, given how the video was received , instead saying he just wants people to be able to come to their own conclusions.
